Self Improvement Is Achieved Through Cosmetic Surgery

Be the best you can be. Today, media has led many women in America to believe self-improvement is achieved through cosmetic surgery. Every year thousands of women go under the knife to make themselves the picture perfect American. As years go by, the amount of people getting plastic is steadily increasing. In the year 2007 there were approximately 12 million cosmetic surgeries performed in the United States alone. The number of people receiving surgery increased 59% since 2000 (Markey, Charolette, and Patrick Markey, 5). Media influences our societal values, has led to women developing negative views of their body image and swayed them to go extreme measures to transform their bodies to what they see in the media. We all have a hard time managing that we are in a body and we are subject of other people’s gaze. It is human nature to make judgments based on appearance. What we look like should not influence who we really are. â€Å"A 2 year old who, when asked whether she wante d her hair like her mother when she grew up, replied, â€Å"want hair like Barbie.† We are all reminded that no one is immune from the relentless impact of the ready-made image of so-called beauty to which we appear to become enslaved at even younger ages† (Lemma, Alessandra, 6).
